Informal settlements

Unplanned settlements and areas where housing is not in compliance with the land planning building regulations. There are many people living in informal settlement in our country. Those people don't have proper boundaries, which means people live on those particular areas don't have ownership of the property. They don't have legal documents to prove that they own the land. That when government come and kick them out of the place. South Africa government try to decrease the number of people live in informal settlement, by building them RDP houses.
Causes of Informal settlements.

Urban areas is the most causes that spread Informal settlement, because lots of people come from rural areas to seek for jobs in urban areas. Some of them they do find jobs and majority of them don't found the job, that when the informal settlement starts. If you have job ,that means you don't have money to pay for rent. Urban areas you have to pay for rent, electricity and water. Those people don't afford to pay those bills. Poverty also lead to informal settlement. In urban areas there's high population, which leads to informal settlement. Government are unable to manage all people responsibilities, because of funds for financial resources. Lack of supply by government to authorities is also a reason why poverty and informal settlement comes rapidly.

Effects of the informal settlements.

People living in informal settlements has to walk distance for services, like health, education and clean water, because its difficult to build roads and other social services. Pressure can also come from environmental hazards such as floods and fire. Their health and living standards often suffer when their settlements are situated close to sources of pollution. They frequently ill as a result of the poor quality of their environment and exposure to disease. Most of people live in informal settlement get diseases easily.

Solutions of informal settlements.

Government should provide enough social needs of the citizens. They also have to develop rural areas, so that people they will find jobs next to their families, not go for job hunting in urban areas. Most people that live informal settlement came to urban areas because they where looking for jobs. Government should provide more RDP houses to poor families. Increasing community engagement, by involving and inviting people to participate in rebuilding and uplifting their communities, ultimately encourages and promotes further betterment in the lives of residents.

  1. The video is so touching. Everything discussed is actually what's happening in the country. People living in informal settlements are given empty promises all the time.

  2. south African is a diverse country, we dont expect it to be perfect. but we expect our country to be alert to things that are happening around. things that classify our country as the worst country. the situation at the informal settlement is bad and I strongly think the government should stand up and do something. the government dont have to do such, just a little change in important things can make a great impact.

    1. South African government has to create job opportunity for people and skills development programme , so that they can be able to help themselves out of the informal settlements.
